This video show how bicyclists are thrown into traffic when they collide with an opening car door. This is why bicycling traffic safety instructors in the Cycling Savvy and Smart Cycling programs teach cyclists to ride outside the door zone:Visit cyclingsavvy.org and bikeleague.org for more.
I was doored once by a guy who parked illegally at a corner (blocking the crosswalk) to pick up a pizza. The force of the door flung me sideways into the middle of Halsted St. in Lakeview. (Those of you from Chicago know how busy this street can be, especially at rush hour.)
ReplyDeleteI could have been dead, except for the courtesy and driving skills of the woman in the car behind me. She stopped immediately, putting her flashers on and blocking traffic to keep anyone from hitting me. As I was lying on the pavement, stunned, she proceeded to yell at the clueless jerk who doored me.
I wish there were more drivers like her, watching out for us, and fewer like the pizza-pick-up jerk. I was incredibly lucky to get out of it with only minor damage to my bike, a broken tailbone, and a few minor scrapes and bruises.
